Hi Folks,
The Nikon D5100 package is 16.2MP, with one 18 to 55mm zoom, and the second 55 to 200mm zoom is a very good package.
For an extra $150, you get the Canon 60D package with 18MP, plus one zoom lens covering from 18 to 200 mm.
For my money, I will spring that $150 for the Canon 60D package. Reasons:
1. One single lens covering the same range is much more effective in actual situations than having to switch between two lenses. The 18mm to 200mm option represent a superior choice.
2. With just one 18mm to 200mm zoom, there is also the benefit of possibly zero wear on the camera and lens contacting interface, unless you feel like it to break it up after each photo shoot only to put them together again the very next time.
3. Shooting side by side, the 18MP provides better details and tonal quality under the same conditions.
Mind you,
a. I do consider Nikon and Canon 2 top camera manufacturers from Japan.
b. In my 5+ decades of serious classical photography background, the extra $150 for Canon 60D over Nikon D5100 is well worth the money. Spreading over the life time of a good camera it is simply a few pennies a day!
c. Just ask yourself how much is that missed photo opportunity is worth.
One is one too many!!!
d. Contrary to someone who suggested somewhere on the Canon 60D section.
The Canon 60D, Nikon D3100, Nikon D5100, and Nikon D7000
All have the same APS-C size sensor
ZERO difference in this regard.
Simply plain talk!

- The Canon 60d is 2year old technology. If that is what you want.
- The D3100 is available body only to match the with the excellent 18-200mmVR
- While both camera models use APS-C sensors, Canon uses a smaller 1.6 crop sensor. Nikon uses 1.5. No, the sensors are not the same.
- Canon has run into low light problems with their smaller sensors, their new cameras (eg EOS-1D X) actually have lower megapixels to compete with Nikon. Canon is now realizing it's a huge mistake to build cameras high megapixel sensors.

Point is that:
``BEING NEW DOES NOT NECCESARILY MEAN BETTER``
That being said, the Nikon D5100 is a good package for most who do not need pictures exceeding 13`` by 17``.
I much prefer to have at least a year of performance record to base my decision on everything I buy!

Greetings,
My comments for your consideration:
1. For most of us who only need 8`` by 10`` or smaller photo prints, any decent DSLR including the Nikon D3100 and equally priced Canon will do an admirable job.
2. However, if making larger prints (16`` by 20``) is in your future, and for pennies a day more, you can buy a Canon DSLR or Nikon DSLR for $1,300 +/-, .

Hello,
My humble opinion is for you to ask the technical staff at a Best Buy store's camera section.
There you should get more appropriet information.
Good Luck.

Well now .....I think I can safely say that the Nikon D5100 sets a new standard in the competitive entry-level DSLR market.
Pros: Side-mounted tilt / swivel LCD screen; same sensor and processing as the Nikon D7000; good speed and battery life; in-camera HDR and filter effects; Full HD video capture with aperture control; audio levels control and external microphone jack.
I am going to get it finally!!!
