Nikon unveils V1 and J1 mirrorless cameras - what do you think?

Check out the new Nikon compact system that just launched - with all these specs - Both ILCs include 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensors, HDMI / USB connectivity, a 1200fps slo-mo capture mode, 3-inch LCDs, 10fps shooting, high-res electronic viewfinders, and full HD (1080/30p) video captureThe V1 and J1 share nearly identical specs, with the latter model sporting some fairly minor tweaks. Both ILCs include 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensors, HDMI / USB connectivity, a 1200fps slo-mo capture mode (!), 3-inch LCDs, 10fps shooting, high-res electronic viewfinders, and full HD (1080/30p) video capture...  thoughts?

Re: Nikon unveils V1 and J1 mirrorless cameras - what do you think?

Sensor is too small, HD video format is strange and the body design is uninspiring in my opinion.

I've been a Nikon fan for many years but this move confuses me.  The lenses aren't very compact which eliminates any size advantage the body may have in terms of weight and pocketability.

It seems as though Nikon is reluctant to get into this category and aren't putting their full force behind this new line.

Hmmm looks pretty cool to me! I've read the video capabilities are off the hook. Sign me up for a pink one:smileyhappy:

A little pricey for a coloured, plastic camera body with small sensor though don't you think?  The slow-mo video is a really cool feature but the V1 doesn't support 1080 at 60fps here in 2011 (practically 2012).  Really Nikon?

Of the pop up flash mechanism:

"My toothbrush is better designed and I have seen higher grade plastic on a disposable razor. It is literally a 40 cent part on a $600 camera. How is this acceptable?"

It does comes in pink however.

The Nikon J1 is now ready for pre-orders.

Re: Nikon unveils V1 and J1 mirrorless cameras - what do you think?

Check out this video for more information....

Personally I was expecting something with a larger frame instead of smaller (ie DX or FX).  Something that I can bolt on my Nikon flash like the P7100.

However Nikon doesn't want to become a "me too" with existing mirrorless cameras.  Like other mirrorless, there is a market for something larger than a compact, but smaller than a DSLR.  Nikon thinks people want something between a compact and other existing mirrorless cameras... mainly for portability.

Yes, I agree.  I think their challenge will be on price however.  There are a lot of powerful solutions at the same, or slightly lower price without sacrificing size or portability.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see how the general public responds once demo units are available.  I'd be curious to know what Nikons pre-order numbers look like so far.

Looks like Best Buy did an article for the Nikon J1. I don't think the V1 will be available to Best Buy YET. I guess if the J1 gets enough sales they'll consider selling the V1? Time will tell....

I don't like the specifications, but one thing above all I hate: no viewfinder. How do people take pictures with these things in bright light or sunlight? How does one frame what one does not see? How does one focus on what one does not see? No thanks, no mirrorless for me.

Re: Mirrorless viewfinders

It's not just V1, a lot of pocket shooters have gotten rid of the viewfinder to give people "bigger" LCD, while making the camera smaller.

A little tip... you can use an Eye-fi card and send the image to Android or iPhone.  However, these Eye-Fi cards suck a lot of battery power to maintain the wi-fi signals.  Need a second or third battery.
