It’s Oscar season again. As a film buff, I try my best to see all the contenders for best picture and all the films with nominated performances before the Oscars. There are numerous movie news and entertainment websites that have their own predictions and picks both before and after the nominations. The nominations were revealed several weeks ago, and now, I have made my own picks and predictions.
Here are my personal picks and predictions for the 2017 Oscars:
La La Land
Hell or High Water
Manchester by the Sea
My Pick to Win: La La Land
Could Win: Moonlight
Should Win: La La Land
Will Most Likely Win: La La Land
Although my favourite on that list is Lion, I think La La Land is the clear winner this year. It has a great script, it has great performances, it has great direction, and being an original, modern-day musical works in its favour.
Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea
Denzel Washington – Fences
Ryan Gosling – La La Land
Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic
Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
My Pick to Win: Casey Affleck
Could Win: Denzel Washington
Should Win: Casey Affleck
Will Most Likely Win: Casey Affleck
Casey was superb in Manchester by the Sea. Denzel has been gaining momentum for his role in Fences (which he also directed), but I think it’s Casey’s year. Denzel already has a best actor Oscar for Training Day. Not to say that he is unlikely to win again, but I think the Academy is leaning toward Casey Affleck this year.
Emma Stone – La La Land
Natalie Portman – Jackie
Isabelle Huppert – Elle
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins
Ruth Negga – Loving
My Pick to Win: Emma Stone
Could Win: Natalie Portman or Isbelle Huppert
Should Win: Emma Stone
Will Most Likely Win: Emma Stone
I think Emma is the clear winner this year. She was on point in La La Land and she demonstrated her singing prowess. Isabelle Huppert has some momentum going for her, and Natalie Portman was stellar in her portrayal of Jackie Kennedy, but I think the win goes to Emma.
Damien Chazelle – La La Land
Barry Jenkins – Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester by the Sea
Denis Villeneuve – Arrival
Mel Gibson – Hacksaw Ridge
My Pick to Win: Damien Chazelle
Could Win: Barry Jenkins
Should Win: Damien Chazelle
Will Most Likely Win: Damien Chazelle
Damien was the mastermind behind La La Land. I think he has everyone beat this year. He is also hot coming off the momentum from Whiplash a couple years ago. That works in his favour. Barry Jenkins is probably the only other one who can compete with Damien this year. Although Moonlight is an artistic, well-made film with an important subject matter, I think Damien Chazelle has the edge and will come out with the win.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali – Moonlight
Dev Patel – Lion
Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water
Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea
Michael Shannon – Nocturnal Animals
My Pick to Win: Jeff Bridges
Could Win: Jeff Bridges or Mahershala Ali
Should Win: Mahershala Ali
Will Most Likely Win: Mahershala Ali
This is a tough prediction for me. None of these performances stood out to me this year. With that said, I know Mahershala Ali has been highly praised for his work in Moonlight, and I know the consistently good Jeff Bridges has been gaining momentum. I think having already won for best actor in the past works against Jeff this year. Although Mahershala Ali was only in one act of Moonlight, he definitely brought it with his memorable performance, and he will most likely come away with the Oscar this year.
Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis – Fences
Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea
Nicole Kidman – Lion
Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures
Naomie Harris – Moonlight
My Pick to Win: Viola Davis
Could Win: Michelle Williams
Should Win: Viola Davis
Will Most Likely Win: Viola Davis
Viola Davis is the leader in this category this year. She’s been nominated before, and she is due an Oscar. I thought she was the standout performance in Fences. She previously lost to her fellow nominee, Octavia Spencer, when they were both nominated for their work in The Help several years back. Although Octavia was good in Hidden Figures, I felt like the performances of her other co-stars, specifically Janelle Monae (not nominated), were more refreshing. Michelle Williams is always quite amazing, but she was only in maybe 3-4 scenes of Manchester by the Sea. I think Viola has the edge on everyone this year.
Those are my personal picks and predictions! I’m looking forward to the outcome of the Oscars!

I think your picks are all who are going to win. The only surprise may be Huppert stealing Best Actress from Stone. I think Portman was far and away the best of the nominees, but there's no way she's winning without having won any other major award. Such a shame.

Did you get a chance to see Elle? That's actually one I haven't seen yet.
It's on the list. Hoping to see it before next Sunday.
Watched Toni Erdmann last week -- literally at the same time as the news about the American remake came out. I expect it will be winning Best Foreign Film.
