by Blogger on ‎04-30-2015 03:01 PM - last edited on ‎05-01-2015 10:16 AM by Editor in Chief

When I was growing up, my mother had this little jewelry box that I would play with at every possible opportunity. It was fairly small and lined in red velvet, gently curved with a black lacquer finish and a little music box tucked away inside. There was a beautiful bird painted onto the lid in fine gold lines, and I thought it was just the most exquisite thing.

by Blogger on ‎02-28-2015 09:55 PM - last edited on ‎03-05-2015 03:23 PM by Editor in Chief

Since Adventures of Dad has become a monthly blog, there have been a couple of details about baby's first milestones that I'v glossed over.  I wanted to come back to the first words, because I find babies trying to speak and learn language so fascinating. Charlotte picked up her first words around 3 months ago and hasn't looked back.  I'll talk about how I encouraged her to start speaking, and then some blog readers share their kids' first words too, and it isn't just your standard "mom" or "dad" either.

by Blogger on ‎02-09-2015 03:25 AM - last edited on ‎02-12-2015 08:03 AM by Editor in Chief

Each year, Pantone (the self-proclaimed “Color Authority” of the world) releases a Color of the Year, meant to reflect upon the current climate of the world and inspire artists for the coming twelve months.

Last year’s colour was Radiant Orchid, a bright pinky-purple; this year, it’s Marsala, also known as PANTONE 18-1438.

ShedRain umbrellas: Keeping dry (and chic) in a downpour

by Blogger on ‎02-07-2015 01:46 AM - last edited on ‎02-12-2015 07:57 AM by Editor in Chief

The first thing you need to know about the Shedrain umbrellas carried at BestBuy is that, according to the company’s own branding and press materials, their name contains two capital letters: ShedRain, not Shedrain. This is helpful to note, because for the month leading up to today, I was mistakenly referring to the company as “She-Drain” in my head.

by Blogger on ‎02-05-2015 02:04 PM - last edited on ‎02-13-2015 11:26 AM by Editor in Chief

I already wrote about the risks and benefits related to Swaddling (hint, I am a big proponent).  I have also published an article explaining why you should pay attention to the expiration dates of child car seats. One of the latest controversies has to do with baby carriers, and the possibility of them leading to hip dysplasia in children. Is this true? I'll compare models from two leading brands, BABYBJÖRN and Ergobaby, and take a look at some of the latest controversies surrounding baby carriers.

Last week, we talked about creating the perfect romantic evening for your partner on Valentine’s Day (or, might I add after the fact, for yourself—just add in a bubble bath à la carte and you’re good to go). But if you already have your dream evening planned out and you just want to pick out something special and sparkly for the guy or gal in your life, then today’s post is going to be a lot more relevant for you.

Fatigue is one of the most difficult things to deal with on a day-to-day basis. It’s OK if you’re tired once in awhile, but if you find yourself looking at the clock at 2 pm and yawning so hard it makes your eyes water, you might want to consider smoothies to get an all-natural energy boost.

Like most “modern women,” I am many things. I’m a sister, a daughter, a friend; a product photographer-in-denial; a style blogger here at Best Buy’s VIVA blog; a beauty blogger over at theNotice: a beauty blog (where I’ve been writing for over seven years); and, at night… a closet romantic.

The Adventures of Dad Episode 29: Dealing with a sick baby

by Blogger ‎01-28-2015 09:48 PM - edited ‎01-28-2015 09:52 PM

Well, it was bound to happen.  Charlotte got sick for the first time in her life earlier this month, and it wasn't a fun time. She did a complete 180 over the way she normally acts and behaves, and there were more tragic tears shed than the end of the movie My Girl. Still, she's back to laughing and smiling and playing with everybody and everything, but I'll never forget those few days. Let's then talk this month about baby sicknesses and how to deal with them.

Once you have a baby, he becomes the centre of your universe. But the rest of the universe isn't on hold. There are still errands to run, and things to go. Here are some tips on how to keep baby happy while you're out and about getting things done.

Baby Bathing Basics

by Blogger on ‎01-22-2015 09:15 PM - last edited on ‎02-05-2015 09:06 AM by Editor in Chief

I’ll never forget the day my brother and sister-in-law had their first baby. I went to visit them in the hospital and when I arrived, my brother, the proud new father, passed to me his precious new bundle of joy. In retrospect, I did a pretty darn good job of hiding my terror, but all I could think about was that no human as clumsy as me should handle such fragile cargo. That terror was amplified a few months later when I babysat for the first time and had to give the little munchkin a bath. But now that I have four nieces and nephews and my friends are taking it upon themselves to have children of their own, I can confidently say that (a) babies are much more resilient than you think and (b) bathing them doesn’t have to be a nightmare inducing endeavor; especially when you have the right tools and the right attitude.

Baby Feeding 101: essentials to keep newborns to toddlers fed and healthy

by Blogger on ‎01-22-2015 03:19 PM - last edited on ‎01-22-2015 03:23 PM by Editor in Chief

If you have a new baby or one that’s about to arrive, you’ll want to prepare well ahead of time for feeding your baby. As I found out, the key to relaxed feeding is to be very, very prepared with the right baby feeding gear, and that included everything from a breast pump and bottles, then moving onto a cupboard full of bowls, spoons, and sippy cups. Here’s what you need to get started feeding your baby, all the way from newborn to toddler.

How to plan a wedding like a pro

In movies, the love story always has a beginning, a middle, and an end: they meet, they fall in love, and they ride off into the sunset after saying “I do.” In real life, however, things are rarely so clean-cut, and the chunk between the “I will!” and the “I do” is often more of a forest than a path. Here’s how to get from A to B like a pro (without turning into a bride/groom-zilla.)

Controlling Nursery Clutter

by Blogger on ‎01-09-2015 12:28 AM - last edited on ‎01-09-2015 08:19 AM by Editor in Chief

I’m at the point in my life where all of my friends are having babies. As I sit on the sidelines with a glass of vino and watch them navigate through pregnancy and into the unknown, one thing has become very clear: for such itty-bitty things, babies sure need a whole lot of stuff! From onesies and blankets to bottles and diapers, it seems there is no end to what’s needed to rear an infant. However, that doesn’t mean that as a parent you need to live in chaos. There are a number of items you can use to deck out your nursery  that make the most out of the space you have while minimizing clutter as much as possible.

How to plan a healthy diet like a pro

You don’t need to have an eating coach or be friends with a dietician to plan out and stick to a healthy diet, because it’s actually easier to organize than you might think.

Most of us need a way to make fitness fun or we’ll stay firmly planted on the couch, and by having something fun to look forward to, we’ll actually feel motivated to get out there every day. In my opinion, the key to working out every day and making it a good experience is by using wearable technology.

Weight No More: Fit Tips for every body

by Blogger on ‎01-08-2015 01:15 PM

New Year's resolutions and weight loss plans go together like the turkey and mashed potatoes you indulged in over the holiday season. Unfortunately, research shows that a whopping 60% of resolutions fail within a week of the ball dropping in Times Square. Why? Because when it comes to resolutions, we tend to overcommit. If you are relatively sedentary and have never stepped foot on a treadmill, resolving to run a half marathon in three months' time might not be reasonable. So whether you are looking to melt away a few extra pounds, or completely overhaul your fitness regime, here are some tips to get you started on the path to making 2015 your healthiest year ever.

Best Wearable Tech for Runners

by Blogger on ‎01-06-2015 08:18 AM - last edited on ‎01-09-2015 08:14 AM by Editor in Chief

We are officially one week into 2015, and if my visit to the gym yesterday was any indication, the vast majority of Vancouverites have resolved to take up running this year. I couldn’t grab a treadmill to save my life. True, I could have gone outside for a jog in the pouring rain, but that’s not how I roll. That said, it is how others may roll. When it comes to running, we all have different goals. You might be like me and simply want to shed a few Christmas pounds, or you could be an elite athlete training for your next marathon. Whatever the case, there is a wearable gadget out there that will motivate you to achieve your goal.

by Blogger ‎12-31-2014 10:14 PM - edited ‎12-31-2014 10:19 PM

Yes, I was once one of those naive parents who thought I'd be able to avoid getting sucked into the world of kids friendly music, but the CDs (since I haven't popped them onto my iPod yet) in my car now disagree.  What's sold me on listening to all of this music regularly, and how was Charlotte's first Christmas?  Read on to find out what's up this month!
