I can’t say I’m much of a cook. I’m one of those rare breed of people who love to bake, but when it’s time to put dinner on the table, I’d rather pick up a menu and order sushi. Part of the problem is the duration of prep work involved in cooking a big meal - Slicing, dicing, and sautéing take up a lot of time, and I’m always left with sticky pots and pans to scrub.  The other problem? Not having the proper tools to make cooking as simple, safe, and fun as possible.

So when I saw the new lineup of GreenPan products BestBuy.ca is carrying, I was immediately interested. Not only are they the first healthy non-stick pots and pans available, because of the non-stick surface they make cooking and cleanup a snap.

You may have heard of non-stick pans being made with a substance called PTFE. PTFE stands for PolyTetraFluoroEthylene (scary, right?). In a nutshell, PTFE is fine at lower temperatures, but if you heat up your pan beyond a certain point, PTFE starts to break down and release toxic chemicals and fumes. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want that kind of thing going on in my kitchen.

GreenPan products are created with a new non-stick coating called Thermolon. It’s a non-stick mineral-based coating that’s completely PTFE-free, and it’s the same type of substance used to make glass and pottery. Best of all? You can heat a pan with Thermolon to 450 degrees and it still won’t break down and emit toxic chemicals. You might not have to use heat that high to cook, but it definitely reassures you if you’ve ever accidentally left a pan on the stove and forgot to turn off the burner.

Not only are GreenPans environmentally friendly, they’re versatile because they’re available in a variety of sizes. The GreenPan 9.5-Inch Non-Stick Frying Pan is perfect for putting together a quick omelet, or try the GreenPan 12-inch Non-Stick Frying Pan for perfectly sized homemade taco shells. And because the frying pans have a polished stainless steel and aluminum finish, they’re built to stand the test of time.

GreenPan also has a great Non-stick Open Wok so you can cook up an excellent stir-fry. Or, if you’re like me and need an entirely new set of cookware to go with my new non-stick pans, you can pick up the GreenPan Barcelona 10-Piece Cookware Set and be set for years. The only downside? You’ll have no excuse not to cook, so you can kiss those sushi menus goodbye.

Now pick up your GreenPan Non-Stick Frying Pan and try out this recipe for homemade taco shells. It’s an old family favourite, and it’s gluten-free for those of you who avoid gluten at all costs.

Taco Shells

3 Eggs

1 ½ Cup Milk

1 Cup Corn Flour

1 tsp Salt

½ cup Cornmeal

2 tbsp melted butter

Mix together with a handheld blender or stand mixer so everything is well blended. Spread mixture out in a 10 to 12 inch pan, keeping the shell thin (should resemble a crepe). Fry for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until cooked through (Cooking times depend on how thick you've made your shells).

Wrap in tinfoil and keep heated in low oven until ready to serve. Should make approximately 6 - 8 taco shells.
