Converting your TV to a Smart TV has now been made even easier with NetGear’s new NEO TV Streaming Player. There are quite a number of ways to make your TV a Smart TV, as you can see in an article I posted a little while back, but NetGear’s NEO TV one of the least expensive and easiest ways to do it.

At about $65 this TV streaming box is a bargain. It provides up to 1080p Hi-Definition so the picture quality is excellent. So easy to set up – just take it out of the box, plug it into your TV with an HDMI cable, plug the power cord in, and synch it up with your home Wi-Fi network and away you go.

The attached YouTube video shows you how simple it is and the many things that you can do with it. The video was done in the US market so not all the applications that you see are available in Canada, but you will still get a very good idea on everything you can do with it.

In addition to many of the streaming apps that you would expect (NetFlix, YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, Vimeo, Twitter, Facebook, etc.), it comes with 10 games that you can play with the remote. The remote that comes with the device is well laid out and is very zippy. In addition, you can download a free app for either your android or apple phone or tablet that will also give you full control of the NEO TV unit.

This Internet streaming box is nice and small at only 4 X 4 inches and an inch tall, so it will fit just about anywhere. Because it so small and easy to set up, you might even consider it to be a portable device.

Regarding connections, it has an Ethernet port to connect with the Internet but you can also simply wirelessly connect to your home Wi-Fi network. The only way to connect with your TV is using an HDMI connection. Depending on how late a model TV that you have, it may have only one HDMI port that you will need for your cable box. Even though I caution you about this, it is an easy problem to solve by either getting an inexpensive HDMI splitter, or using a Component Video connection for your cable box connection. The NEO TV unit also provides an optical audio port to connect with your surround sound or stereo system, which is my preferred connection because of the quality.

The NetGear Neo TV Streaming Player is a winner. It is inexpensive, easy to set up and use, and will make your TV a lot smarter, enabling you to use it some many more ways. Check it out for yourself, or make it a great gift for someone.
