There’s a saying among photographers that the best camera is the one you have with you. In other words, the most advanced DSLR with the most awesome lens in world does you no good whatsoever if you left it at home because it’s too big to stuff in a pocket or purse.
That adage is the reasoning behind the new Coolpix S01, Nikon’s latest ultra-compact camera and the smallest Coolpix model yet. How small would that be? It weighs just 96 g and it’s not just light, but physically tiny as well, measuring just 51 x 77 x 17 mm. To put that in perspective, this camera is smaller and lighter than a regulation-size deck of playing cards. Could you slip a deck of cards in a pocket? Of course you could, and it stands to reason that you could always have this camera with you, ready to snap those shots or take video of those moments that everyone else misses.
Despite its compact size, the Coolpix S01 still offers most of the features we’ve come to expect in a point-and-shoot. It includes an easy auto mode (with six scene presets), touchscreen navigation, a 3x wide-angle zoom NIKOR lens, electronic vibration reduction, built-in Xenon flash and Nikon’s EXPEED C2 image processing engine. Other key specs include:
One of the ways Nikon was available to achieve its minuscule form factor was by relying exclusively on internal storage. While this eliminates the need to buy and keep track of SD memory cards, it does mean you’ll need to download photos and videos now and then to prevent running out of space. There should be room for 1,000 or more photos at the highest quality setting, so no need to panic, but it is something to be aware of. Downloading the digital photos or movies to a computer is via USB.
To ensure you don’t accidentally crush the smallest Coolpix in history if you happen to forget you're carying it, Nikon manufactured the Coolpix S01’s case using stainless steel for maximum strength.
Stylish, capable, easy to use and eminently pocketable, the Nikon Coolpix S01 is available now in Best Buy stores for $149.99, in red or white.
