There’s was a lot going on during Day 2 of CES 2013, and some of the biggest news was all about those handy little gadgets you carry with you every day. Smartphones are not just thinner and faster, one of them is ready to go with you for a nice, long relaxing dip in the tub. Think I’m joking? Read on:

Sony Xperia Z

_65088192_xperiazcolorrange.jpgLeave it to a company like Sony to come out with the first smartphone that’s ready, willing, and able to take a scrub in your shower. The Xperia Z is literally the talk of the town, and is being broadcast as Sony’s flagship mobile device.

In addition to having a 5-inch full 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) display using the Sony Bravia Engine, it has an ultra-speedy Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 13MP super fast camera. Plus, this little beauty is dust proof and water resistant.

Sony executive Steve Walker told the BBC, “If you want to want to sit in the bath and watch an HD movie this is the device for you.” Who doesn’t Steve? In fact, you can submerge the Xperia Z in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes before possibly having to toss it in a bag of rice.

In addition to being able to float with your bar of soap, the Xperia Z can record spectacular HDR video. All of this comes in a tiny package that’s no bigger than 7.9mm thick. It runs Android 4.1 (upgradeable to 4.2 after launch) includes 4G LTE, a Micro SD slot, and has a NFC chip to stream content to your compatible Sony TV just by tapping it against the remote control.

Check out the video below for more on this little gem from Sony.

Huawei

The Ascend W1 has a 4-inch LCD display with 480x800 resolution and a Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1.2 GHz processor running the Windows 8 operating system. It’s also got the Adreno 305 GPU and 4GB internal storage, expandable via the microSD slot. Plus, there’s a 5-megapixel camera.

All in all, a nice little smartphone for those of you hankering to take Windows with you on the go.

Waterproof any phone with HzO

Screen Shot 2013-01-09 at 9.40.52 AM.pngA startup from Utah made waves…well, more accurately, they made beer bubbles, with the latest smartphones at CES 2013. HzO showed off their new WaterBlock technology by dropping a Samsung Galaxy in a glass of beer. For this, they were awarded a CES Innovations Design and Engineering prize.

WaterBlock technology involves a nano-coating process which covers the internal components of your device with a film to blocks moisture. It’s completely transparent when used on metals or plastic.

When you think of how many people drop their phone in the toilet (yes, this happens all the time), lake, or pool, HzO WaterBlock technology will be a lifesaver. Check out the video and see for yourself.
