UPDATE March 22, 1:45pm PST

The Apple iPad 2 will be available at Best Buy stores on Friday, March 25 at 5pm local time. We recommend that you get there early!

An hour ago, Apple CEO Steve Jobs delivered a much anticipated keynote presentation from San Francisco, rumored to be the unveiling of the iPad 2...and the rumors were right. The iPad 2 boasts a newer, sleeker look with new hardware and new software. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from the second generation iPad:

  • Thinner, lighter, faster
  • FaceTime
  • Smart Covers
  • 10-hour battery

  • Dual -core A5 chip
  • 33% thinner, 15% lighter
  •  8.8mm thick, weighing 1.3 pounds (thinner than iPhone 4!)
  • Available in black and white
  • Two cameras
  • FaceTime
  • HD video
  • Photo Booth

Smart Covers:

  • Attaches magnetically, aligns perfectly
  • Folds into a stand for typing and watching

iPad Software Update:

  • Airplay enhancements – stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your HDTV via Apple TV
  • Improved Safari performance – twice as fast with the new Nitro JavaScript engine
  • iTunes Home Sharing – play your entire iTunes library from anywhere in the house
  • iPad side switch – customize the switch on the side of your iPad to lock the screen rotation or mute the volume
  • Personal HotSpot for iPhone 4 – bring wi-fi with you wherever you go

If that weren’t enough, iPad 2 also doubles as skateboard! I kid, I kid.

Will you scoop up the iPad 2? What do you think of the new enhancements? Let us know in the comments section below!

I expected more enhancements; no change in screen resolution, no mention of RAM which probably means it is still 256mb (competitors boast 1GB of RAM in their tablets), no stereo speakers, no specs on camera pixels which leads you to assume they are low?

I really wanted to buy one and was holding out, but now I am not sure.  I may look at the competitors or hold out for the iPad 3 which will hopefully be a worthwhile upgrade.

Looks like the back camera is 720p, which SHOULD mean 1280 x 720, which is 900 kilopixels (under 1 megapixel).

The front camera is VGA, which is 640 x 480, which is ~307 kilopixel.

You won't be buying an iPad 2 for the camera QUALITY. Just that it's there at all is going to make for some fun new applications. You'll be able to use the back camera for barcode software etc.

What's the difference how much ram it has, if it does what you want, quickly? Anyways, it supposedly has double the ram from the iPad 1... Either way, I have NEVER had a ram memory problem on the iPad 1, so it's no big deal. The MORE IMPORTANT thing is how the OS manages memory allocation, and I know from experience that it does an amazing job with that.

My question is real simple: how do I get one? Will there be a waiting list or will I have to wait in line on the morning of March 25th?

@popple73 - stay tuned! I'll update this blog as soon as I know more. There may be an opportunity to pre-order iPad 2 online, I'll keep you posted.

Apparently it does have 512MB of RAM, which should be expected. I'd also assume the cameras are identical to the iPhone 4, though I've heard the 4th-gen iPod Touch cameras weren't as good. But I am psyched about the optional HDMI-out adapter. Looks like it'll be a gooder, though I was hoping for the 2048 x 1536 retina display that it was rumored to have.

I just hope the prices are the same as in the US since our Canadian dollar is now higher.  That is the nominal values better be the same with no additional extra $50-$100 increase!

Do we have a price set yet for the iPad 2?

I want one on March 26th - not a white one - a black one. Think it is possible - Richmond Hill?

iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G

I have the original and the hubby has kept his hands off of it so for my bday. I am getting him one. :-) Yeah, he is getting the 2. Must be love!

if I have ipad 1 I bought at boxing day...

and I brought warranty for 2 years....

is there any way I can exchange to ipad 2??

I want to get an ipad2, but the price really is an issues for me. Both that it will likely cost $550 and that in the U.S. it will likely be $500. If thing were right it would be $485.68 for us canadians. I'm hoping bestbuy and other canadian retailers realize this, or is apple the one who is unfair? anyway the ipad2 looks... like a moderately refined ipad, they should've boosted screen resolution, ram, and given it an sd card slot. I know for myself that with a portable tablet like that I'd like to have my entire media library stored on it, or sd cards anyway, but that could go up hundreds of gigabytes or more. If the romours (I forgot how to spell it) are true and I hope they aren't because I want an ipad 2, the ipad 3 may be coming in september, which would render an ipad 2, a high tech paperweight. Which is what it is in comparison to, every other computer I own. By that I mean, when tablets came out why couldn't they be made more like a laptop without a bottom, and with a touch screen, instead of oversized phones. Now it seems like everyone is trying to make it so and slowly catchup to laptop like performance on a tablet. The ipad 2 looks like the only quality tablet on the market... i've had an android tablet and the os is useless. I doubt google will be capable of getting a quality os with what will likely be a rushed release of honeycomb, still it may be a break from a cheap os on tablets. At least with the ipad you get good apps though, at high prices.

Whatever the ipad 2 is, a successor to the ipad 1, or the ipad 1 in a different suit with a few new bits, I'll likely get one, because no other competitor can get remotely close to its appeal and ability, well Archos has the design and size right... I wonder what they'll come up with.

I hope there is a way to pre-order I received a bunch of gift cards for Christmas to get an Ipad and have been waiting for this.

what a waist, it comes out for the us on the 11th but we have to wait until the 25th. At least I live in Niagara so I can go over there to get it, and our dollar is worth more. But still, who thought releasing it in canada on the 25th was a good idea while the us gets it on the 11th.  Hopefully, I am miss informed and apple will sell it on the 11th, and it will arrive in stores on the 25th... but what are the chances of that.

Also - if you set up a waiting list - can we pick them up at the store? (as opposed to waiting for shipping)

What about the Motorola Xoom?  I'd rather get one of those - but there isn't A WORD about it in Canada ANYWHERE?  What's going on?

by lazz Luminary
on ‎03-12-2011 06:54 PM

Well, apparently the Xoom isn't doing so well. Personally, I"m waiting for the Blackberry Playbook. Yes, it's a smaller screen. But, for me, that's perfect. Easier to carry. And what they are stuffing it with, makes it worth it.

Still, gotta love how adverstising works. News feeds, tech blogs, Ect. All talk about APPLE EVERYTHING. While their devices aren't bad, they still aren't, in my honest opion, the end all. Apple isn't, which, I'll probably piss off many by saying this, aren't the best company in the world.

But I digress. To each their own. I, for one, am saving myself for the playbook.

Will there be a sale on ipad 1 units once the ipad 2s are available?

by georgiasinging
on ‎03-13-2011 10:01 AM

Maybe I'm stupid (not) but you can't see me so all's good. I have so many questions about this product having been a windows user for 1000 years.

What can a computer do that an IPad cannot?

How would you pay music anywhere in the house and would you be able to turn it off from different rooms? turn it off for the entire house from the originating room?

Movies.. clear?

I know..go look this stuff up, but I have and new questions arise each time.

When will pre-order come out online?

by Isadorable
on ‎03-14-2011 11:16 AM

I've called today in a store in Laval (Qc). And they told me that there will be a pre-sale. But the clerck couldn't tell me when.

He also informed me that for the pre-sale, there will be the option on having the item sent to your home address OR pick-up in the store.

He didn't know when the pre-sale was going to be posted on the website, but he told me to check regularly.

Hope this helps you out a little for the pre-sale.

Hi everybody - I can totally appreciate that this is a hot product. I'm hoping to snag one as well! As soon as I have more details around price and when the online pre-sale will take place, you'll all be among the first to know. Stay tuned...

The Ipad is going to be sold in Canada later than the original date of the March 25?

by JKVarga
on ‎03-14-2011 09:16 PM

I've looked through a bunch of confusion on the comments, so just thought I'd clear it up. No, I'm not a Mac expert, but I know more than the average person.

The iPad 2 has 512MB of RAM. It's also the fastest "mainstream" tablet out there at this point. Although the cameras are less than a megapixel, and the photo quality isn't that good, the back camera does shoot 720p video. Which is HD.

And the Canadian Apple website still says March 25th, so a later launch date in Canada is very unlikely. Also, for those that want to pre-order, pre-orders started in the USA at 1 AM on the 11th. The day it launched.

@Georgia Singing:

It pretty much does everything that a Computer does. BUT it plays over 400 000 iOS games and 65 000 iPad specific apps. That's more than any other tablet out there.

As for music, if you have an Apple TV, you can use Airplay (button on the bottom right of the screen while looking at photos, watching movies, and listening to music) to stream it to your Apple TV. You can also hook up AirPort Express to some speakers and play it through that also using AirPlay (AirPort Express is an Apple Wi-Fi- Base Station for $99), you can also buy a speaker that is already AirPlay compatible and use AirPlay with that. (Speaker can cost from $100 to $1000).

Same thing applies with movies minus AirPort and AirPlay speakers.

Yes, iPad 1's are now $419 in Canada

by JKVarga
on ‎03-14-2011 09:17 PM

Now for my question: Like the Best Buys in the states, will there be a ticket system instead of having us line up? And will stores open at 5 PM as well? I'm sort looking forward to spending 24 hours in line in Saskatoon.

Sorry to rub salt into your wounds who are dying for an iPad 2, but Apple has posted deliver times on their website to 4-5 weeks out. I spoke to Best Buy today and they said that most likely some of the stock they were expecting will be delayed.
