I use Google Maps too, but you can get yourself in a lot of trouble if you don't have cell coverage wherever you go.
Also the data connections are oftentimes less reliable than a proper GPS, so you may find yourself in the middle of nowhere and no data signal and no Google.
What I typically do is rent the GPS with my rental car. That way, I know for sure it will work.
I'm not that familiar with GPS brands, but I have used Garmin and they were pretty good.
Also, some car rentals in Europe already have navigation in the car.
