Its possible to run a sub without an external amplifier but typically it will not be powered enough via the factory deck.

I'd suggest going to a car audio retailer and find out the best route, typically even a basic amplifier will be a significant improvement.

as @Computers_Mike said its very rare that the deck will have enough power for the sub. Is there a reason why you don't want an amp? is it just cost?

As mentioned above, an amplifier is required, and since most subwoofer amplifiers are small enough to fit in small areas, it can also be integrated to the subwoofer' cabinet design.

Can you tell us which car you have, and the rest of components such as radio used and door speakers etc..,?

Cabinet design and proper speaker selection will yield best results.

I managed to get phoenominal results with dual 8" subs in an '85 Accord.
